Higher Certainty Outputs: Reduce Prompt Ambiguity

Techniques to make prompts more deterministic and repeatable across generations.

What “higher certainty” means

In prompt writing, “certainty” means you can run the same prompt multiple times and still get outputs that are:

  • close to the intended subject
  • consistent in style
  • predictable in composition

Techniques that help

1) Use concrete descriptors

Replace vague words (nice, beautiful, cool) with concrete ones:

  • “soft rim light”
  • “matte ceramic texture”
  • “overcast daylight”

2) Remove contradictions

Conflicting instructions reduce certainty:

  • “minimalist” + “highly ornate”
  • “clean background” + “busy scene”

3) Constrain the composition

Say how the image is framed:

  • close-up, wide shot, centered, rule-of-thirds
  • bird’s-eye view, side view

4) Specify a style lane

Stick to one style lane per prompt:

  • cinematic photography
  • watercolor illustration
  • 3D render

5) Iterate one change at a time

If you change five things at once, it’s hard to tell what worked.

Use a reference image for stability

Reference images provide stronger constraints. You can start from a reference prompt and then tweak:

  • subject swap
  • lighting swap
  • mood swap
